I've written for the cello. It has a huge expressive range, many articulations, an ideal solo instrument. I don't play one but have the advantage of 3 pretty good cellists in our local orchestra whom I can consult. If I had a favourite cellist it would be an earlier one: Janos Starker (alas, passed on now).
The Dança from Villa-Lobos' Baachianas Brasileiras No 5 (for Soprano and 8 cellos) was what awakened me to the instrument.
