The guilty verdict of former police officer Derek Chauvin is reverberating through the United States, with Joe Biden set to address the country.
Former police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of murdering George Floyd in the United States.
The 12-person jury deliberated for about 10 hours before arriving at a unanimous verdict, finding Chauvin guilty on all three counts: second degree unintentional murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter.
The most serious of those charges carries a maximum sentence of 40 years, though Chauvin is unlikely to face such a long period in prison. The guidelines for an offender with no criminal record suggest a sentence of about 12.5 years.
The sentencing phase of the trial is still to come.
Chauvin was taken from the courtroom in handcuffs moments after the verdict was read. Meanwhile, Mr Floyd’s brother Philonise hugged the prosecutors.
Mr Floyd died in Minneapolis last year after a confrontation with police, who had responded to reports he’d used a fraudulent $US20 note to purchase cigarettes.
Bystanders filmed Chauvin kneeling on the unarmed African-American man’s neck and back for nine minutes and 29 seconds, a position he maintained despite Mr Floyd’s pleas that he couldn’t breathe.

A case of more than reasonable force used. George was never aggressive, compliant, polite and respectful to the officer. Yet his life was ended because of this dick, who is no longer a law enforcer and will be a number in gen pop prison. Wonder how long he will survive once the inmates know what he was? It won't be pretty.

The 16 year old girl in Ohio tried to attack the police, not just bystanders. Yea, that is what i heard. It is tough being a cop. Glad I am no longer one. We were trained to shoot the legs and arms to stop someone. We were trained to shoot to kill if no other choice. It is a tough call to make in the heat of the moment. We used what is called a FATS machine to help us make those kinds of calls. It is a system where you would see scenarios of life size on a screen and we would shoot or not shoot in situations. I was a cop during the Rodney King days. Not fun at all!!!!
I really feel for cops these days and the criminals too, if that even makes any sense. There are bad judgement calls by cops when it comes to shooting and those are who I feel for, but then if people were not out there breaking the law, they wouldn't be putting themselves in risky situations. So glad I am no longer a cop, so glad i am no longer a cop, so glad i am no longer a cop. (cant say it enough!)
